A blockbuster release of the album era, it also propelled record sales throughout the music industry during the 1970s. It brought Pink Floyd international fame, bringing wealth and plaudits to all four band members. The Dark Side of the Moon is among the most critically acclaimed albums and often features in professional listings of the greatest albums. The album was promoted with two singles, " Money" and " Us and Them". The sleeve, which depicts a prismatic spectrum, was designed by Storm Thorgerson in response to keyboardist Richard Wright's request for a "simple and bold" design which would represent the band's lighting and the album's themes. Snippets from interviews with the band's road crew and others are featured alongside philosophical quotations. The Dark Side of the Moon explores themes such as conflict, greed, time, death and mental illness. Engineer Alan Parsons was responsible for many of the sonic aspects of the recording, and for the recruitment of session singer Clare Torry, who appears on " The Great Gig in the Sky". The group employed multitrack recording, tape loops, and analogue synthesisers, including experimentation with the EMS VCS 3 and a Synthi A. The record builds on ideas explored in Pink Floyd's earlier recordings and performances, while omitting the extended instrumentals that characterised the band's earlier work. New material was recorded in two sessions in 19 at EMI Studios (now Abbey Road Studios) in London. Developed during live performances before recording began, it was conceived as a concept album that would focus on the pressures faced by the band during their arduous lifestyle, and also deal with the mental health problems of former band member Syd Barrett, who departed the group in 1968. But whilst the basic premise may be a dark one, there’s tons of over-the-top promise in a game that rarely ever takes itself too seriously.Īs with any good FMV, success may well be down to the acting talents involved and in The Dark Side of the Moon you’ve got Anarosa Butler as computer geek conspiracy theorist Alyx and Rupert Booth taking on the role of the evil Gedeon. It’s here where a bit of puzzle solving comes to the fore, all as you try to get to the bottom of what is going on in this sci-fi thriller. It plays out in the village of Marywine, a little place that is full of intrigue. The thing is, this is a game that plays on secrets, on mysteries, and with an impending solar eclipse incoming, and glowing lights in the sky, god knows what may happen. Working live-action video with some point and click elements, The Dark Side of the Moon features no less than six outcomes as you try and help the protagonist – Dean Hamilton – bring his two children back to safety. It’s a premise that has us excited and whilst it would probably work well as a standard video game, the push through interactivity and the FMV scene heightens the excitement. ![]()
